The Health Service Skills FETAC (Level 5) award has been developed under the initiative of the SKILL Project. The aim of the SKILL project is to educate, develop and train support staff in the health services to the optimum of their abilities in order to enhance their role in the quality of service provision to service users. The programme will provide participants with an opportunity to develop their skills as health service staff working in the intellectual disability sector. It will be delivered over 12 months by two providers, the Open Training College and the Vocational Education Committee (VEC). The modules discussed here are those provided by the Open Training College only.

Course Participants
Health care assistants, unqualified care assistants, family support workers, home support workers, therapy assistants, speech and language assistants, laboratory aides, household staff, catering staff, porters, laundry workers, general assistants, bus drivers and escorts, other key support grades.

Course Assessment
At the end of each module, you will be asked to carry out an assignment for submission to the Open Training College for assessment. The assignment relates to material covered in the modules and workshop. It emphasises the practical application of the course material to your work situation. You will be given written tutor feedback on this assignment.

Learner Support
A tutor will be appointed to support you through your studies.
You will have:
•  Contact with your tutor during the workshops
•  A scheduled telephone tutorial once per month
•  A 'hotline' to your tutor for emergencies
•  eLearning supports
